BT to Improve Broadband Speeds across the UK

Consumer World, Tech + More, Telco

The BT Retail Total Broadband service has, of late, been receiving a lot of flak from the press, especially the BBC, which has published less than flattering reviews about the service. However, it appears that the company has taken the allegations of slow speeds as constructive criticism and it now seeks to upgrade the broadband packages of its customers, free of cost.

Close to 5 million corporate houses and home customers across the UK will now benefit from speeds of up to 20Mb. The service will initially be delivered from around 549 telephone exchanges, which cover 10 million homes and businesses that constitute 40% of the total customers in the UK. It will later expand to more areas, becoming available in around 55% of homes and businesses by March 2010.

Moreover, it is not just download speeds that are going to improve but upload speeds as well, which will now go as high as 1Mb. A site that offers some great broadband advice is Broadband Genie, they had good info on broadband speeds, or just click here to compare broadband.

As far as the possible causes of slow broadband speeds are concerned, BT had indicated that improper wiring in customers’ homes was to be blamed. However, the company has found a solution to this problem by giving customers a free Broadband Accelerator, which will ensure that electromagnetic interference would not hinder broadband speeds.

Speaking on these initiatives, Gavin Patterson, CEO of BT Retail said that this service would completely transform the way people carry out their daily activities on the web. He added that BT’s goal was to fulfil promises of higher speeds, in accordance with the government’s Digital Britain initiative.

Those who wish to find out if they are eligible for the 20Mb upgrade can search BT’s website. Current customers have already been informed of the upgrade and will soon sign new contracts.
